Landscapes

Uganda is abundant with numerous majestic highlands, vast savannahs and lush tropical rainforests. Uganda safaris and tours offer views of the mountains Rwenzori, Elgon, Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Morungole and Moroto etc. There are also lots of winding valleys and flat-topped plateaus. Fauna

Mammals

Uganda’s wildernesses shelter hundreds of unique and fascinating wild animals in and outside protected areas. The number of recorded mammal species exceed 340, including 25 globally threatened species and the big 5. Mammal species to see during Uganda safaris and tours include lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, African elephants and cape buffaloes etc. Uganda is among the only 2 countries where tree climbing lions are found.

Primates

Within the mammalian class, 24 of these are primate species. These include the iconic mountain gorillas, common chimpanzees and golden monkeys. With over 51% of the total population of mountain gorillas in the wild, Uganda is among the best places to see them. Other key primate species include vervet monkeys, olive baboons, L’Hoest’s monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys and red-tailed monkeys etc.

Birds

Uganda is endowed with approximately 1,016 bird species, representing around 10% of the global totals. Among these are plenty of migrant species and over 25 Albertine endemics. The birds can be found in different habitats including wetlands, grasslands, woodlands, forests, wetlands and at lakes and rivers among others. Birds include shoebill stork, grey crowned crane, great blue turaco, hooded vultures, Rwenzori turaco and common bulbul.

Fish

There are around 600 species of fish that can be found in Uganda’s open waters including lakes, rivers, swamps and streams etc. The most renowned water bodies include Lake Victora, Lake Albert, Lake Kyoga, Lake Edward, Lake George, River Mpanga and River Nile etc. Some of the fish species living in these waters include catfish, silver catfish, Nile tilapia, lung fish, haplochromis and Nile perch etc.

Other fauna

Uganda also features over 98 species of amphibians and more than 178 species of reptiles. Some of the most important amphibians in Uganda include the common reed frog, Nile ridged frog, western olive toad and Nutt’s River frog etc. Reptiles include black mamba, Finch’s agama, speckle lipped Mabuya, Nile crocodile, graceful chameleon, three horned chameleon and Uganda blue headed tree agama etc.

Flora

Uganda boasts over 5,406 species of plants, including 4,500 flowering plants. More than 30 species of these plants are endemic to the country. Among the plants are plenty of cash crops and medicinal plants. Cash crop plants include maize, cocoa, coffee, mango, jack fruit, millet, sorghum and tea among others. There are plenty of species of ferns, mosses, trees, shrubs and herbs that you can see on Uganda safaris and tours.
